It meets all needs and I was actually really surprised at the sound quality. For 70 bucks it rocks! The only issue is that it takes a few seconds to connect and when it's on and not playing music it buzzes alot. Easily fixed by turning it off and on though. Great Product.

  • customer review: I have been looking for an inexpensive solution to get music and internet radio in several rooms throughout my home. I didn't want to go through the hassle of running wires and all that stuff, so I settled on the Logitech Squeezebox Duet and these Acoustic Research wireless speakers. The two units perform flawlessly together! Because these speakers can be operated in mono or stereo mode (switch on the back) I am able to place one upstairs in my bathroom, and the other one on an end table in my living room.

I am really impressed by the range and clarity of these speakers. I have had wireless speakers in the past and the static was always apparent. Not only do these speakers have ZERO interference, but there's no manual adjustment required for tuning! They automatically tune themselves and the results are crystal clear.

Be sure to turn up the volume of the audio source you are feeding these speakers or the receiver will not turn on! I thought my receiver was defective, until I turned the volume up on my Squeezebox Duet receiver then it popped right on.

These really are great speakers, and they are bigger than they look on this website!

Speaker contacts at rear of speakers are quite robust (metallic cinch-locks); not mentioned in the ad. These are great speakers for under-eaves or in spots protected from direct precipitation. Plastic mounting brackets seem slightly under-engineered but work fine; as long as you're not mounting them facing a heliport, you'll be good to go.

  • Built in 6 Channel Power Amplifier
  • 2.0 Channel Stereo Line Input Jack for VCD, DVD or All Audio Devices
  • 5.1 Channel Line Input Jack for Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS
  • Space-Saving Subwoofer
  • customer review: I bought this for my husband for a present. Despite it being an obscure, unheard-of brand, this system was better than I expected as far as sound quality. I also really like that the speakers are small (about 4"x4"x4"), so they are unobtrusive in our really small living room.
The only con is really how short the wires are. We ran the rear speakers up to the roof, and then around the room to behind the couch. The area is only approx 10'x8', and the wires barely reached. The front speakers didn't even have enough lenghth to reach from the subwoofer on the floor, to the top corners at the front of the room (6-8' of lenghth needed). But all in all, a great sounding system, and perfect for my budget and needs. In the future maybe I'll get a higher quality one, but this is just fine for now.

    Weather-Resistant Indoor/ Outdoor Wireless Speaker

    by Brookstone

    $99.99
  • Powerful 900MHz technology ensures your signal gets through.
  • No tuning ever! Phase Lock Loop circuitry automatically keeps a clear audio signal.
  • Three audio channels prevent interference with other cordless devices.
  • Blue lighting illuminates the wireless outdoor speaker for extra ambiance at night.
  • AC adapters included. Also runs on eight (8) D batteries (not included).
  • customer review: I have had this speaker for quote some time now and am on my second one. The first speaker received simply did not work. Brookstone swapped it out and provided me with a second one. While the sound quality is OK it does pick up a lot of interference even over a short distance. The issue that bothers me the most is the lack of craftsmanship. The battery pack takes 8D batteries. Well, we used this speaker a lot during the summer and over the winter had left it inside the house mostly unused. The following summer when attempting to use the speaker, it no longer worked on batteries alone. Plugging the speaker in; it worked. Apparently, the weight of the batteries in the battery pack caused the pack to come loose and the speaker would no longer work on batteries alone without a lot of effort and shimmies in the pack. This is a pain and poorly designed.

Contacting Brookstone at this point - well you know, just fell outside of the one year warranty so they wouldn't help at all.

Now I am looking for a new speaker and it will not be this one.

    Travel Speaker System

    by Sony (SRS-TP1BLK)

    $24.99 $13.46
  • Passive travel speaker
  • Compact and stylish design with a protective speaker lid
  • Lid also works as a speaker stand
  • Storable cord for convenient portability
  • Neodymium magnet for quality sound
  • customer review: This is a good product. I really like the simple yet elegant design. The sound quality is surprisingly clear. Don't hope for too much bass out of these (as is expected for the small speakers). I do not recommend these as the primary source of sound for your music player in your living room. For that you definitely want to invest in something bigger. I think they're most ideal for times when you want music on the go, but don't want to use headphones. In my case, I use it while I'm working as a bus driver (can't wear headphones while driving). Some people have said that the volume isn't very high on these, but on my ipod it's more than enough.

    Panasonic Folding Travel Speakers (RPSPT70)

    by Panasonic (RPSPT70)

    $35.34 $12
  • Manufacturer Part Number: RP-SPT70
  • customer review: I bought a pair of Panasonic travel speakers for my mp3 player and love them. They are small enough to pack in my carry on luggage and produce a decent sound. I also use them in my 63 "Vette in place of the radio which died long ago!

My nephew tried to steal my speakers, so I bought him his own set! He is a fan, too.

Good value at a good price!

EOS 100RB Additional Black Wireless Remote Speaker for use with EOS base System

    by Eos (EOS100RB)

    $149.99 $108.63
  • Additional wireless speaker for use with Eos base system
  • Two neodymium tweeters & a ported back-firing subwoofer for rich, full sound
  • 2.1 surround sound stereo with independent volume control
  • Rugged enough for outdoor use; range of 150-feet indoors, 300-feet outdoors
  • Wall outlet mounting or tabletop stand
  • customer review: I bought this unit to accompany the main base unit (EOS 100T1RB Wireless Audio System.) I have both wireless speakers (the base unit comes with one) set up in my house which is made primarily of cement and metal rebar. Like any other wireless device (cordless phone or WIFI network) the signal strength does break down with increased distance in this type of home. To my amazement these speakers function quite well in this difficult environment. In a house composed of wood, I would fully expect them to reach the range of manufacturer.

On to the important stuff. I would have given this product five stars, but my only ding is the lack of deep rich base; I'm a purist and like to feel and hear my deep rich base. But I tell you honestly, for the price and the concept these speakers can't be touched. They have amazingly rich sound in the mid and upper range and the independent volume adjustment of each speaker allows you to blend the music evenly depending on your listening environment. The speakers have a plug that either remains affixed to the back and you plug the speaker directly into the wall (think night light style, covers plug) or you can remove the plug and it has about a three foot wire lead that allows you to place the speaker on a table or as I have them, on pillars, (covered) outdoors.

While this review isn't specifically for the main docking station, I'll take a minute to speak on that as well. The docking station is very user friendly and really has a strong sound. The remote controls both the volume and with my Nano, play, pause, skip forward and backward. All of the units have a soft blue light in the antenna for the wireless system and they glow when the units are turned on. The main base unit can support up to four wireless speakers (three additionally purchased.) Also important, this unit can be used with other non-Ipod MP3 players or the like. There is an auxiliary cord that can be plugged into the headphone jack of just about any other player and can be run through the docking station (BONUS.) Finally if you do have an Ipod family player, the docking station does charge the player when in the cradle.

All in all, while not the cheapest docking station on the market (did you really think a wireless unit would be under $15 at your discount store) the concept is novel and the sound quality is defiantly worth the investment. With the flexibility to move the speakers from plug to plug, you can customize your listening arenas.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 - PC multimedia speaker system - black

    by Klipsch (2.1)

  • 200W total RMS output power
  • 31Hz - 20kHz frequency response
  • 106dB SPL output level
  • Magnetically shielded
  • Detachable grills
  • customer review: I read some reviews on the ProMedia 2.1 calling its longevity into question, but I went ahead and bought it after comparing it to similar JBL, Logitech, Bose, and Harmon Kardon speakers. After three years I am still blown away by the sound I hear! Whenever I buy new music, I always listen to it on the ProMedia 2.1 first to find out how it REALLY sounds - clear and distinct lows, mids, and highs, with pounding bass. The self-proclaimed audiophile downstairs has a 7.1 setup, and my puny 2.1 system takes his to the line, if not outdoes it. Thanks, Klipsch. I'm much more than satisfied.

Griffin 4019-FIRESS FireWave Surround Sound for Macs

    by Griffin Technology (4019-FIRESS)

    $99.99 $43.22
  • ¿ The first and only FireWire Surround Sound for Mac
  • ¿ Powered by FireWire connection, no extra cables
  • ¿ Features an extra FireWire port for chaining devices
  • ¿ Small size makes it easy to incorporate into any computer setup
  • customer review: The audio went out on my G4 Quicksilver, so I got this to recover sound on the Mac. I'm using it only for stereo, so I can't grade it on its 5.1 surround sound capabilities. As a 2-channel, stereo replacement it works without any problems. My speakers are Dell issued (1999) Harmon Kardon HK195 speakers, and my headphones are 32 ohm Philips SHP2500/37 Full Size Headphone w/ Volume Control.

So this is a cheap setup. The FireWave drives the Philips headphones well enough for iTunes, but nearly needs to be at full volume for DVDs. I intend to upgrade the headphones significantly, to the 80 ohm version of Beyer Dynamic DT 770 PRO Closed Dynamic Headphones, so in anticipation, I've ordered a headphone amp not listed on amazon (Rane HC 4S). They do list its big brother the Rane HC-6 Headphone Amplifier, although that is now upgraded to the HC 6S. There are cheaper options, e.g. the PreSonus HP4 4-Channel Compact Headphone Amplifier. I hope to replace the Harmon Kardon speakers with a pair of Adam Audio A5 Monitors, which are priced per single monitor.

The Griffin FireWave is a "Desktop Solution" for OSX 10.4 and 10.5 and may be in the process of being discontinued. Griffin offers it at a deep discount and there is only release 1.0 software on the included CD or available from Griffin as a download.

Audio-Technica AT-SP21 BK Compact portable speakers

    by audio-technica

    $24.95
  • works with any audio device with a headphone minijack
  • passive stereo speaker system
  • lightweight, portable design
  • attached cable with stereo minijack plug
  • customer review: These speakers really fill a niche created by the ipod touch since Apple created the App Store. When I downloaded a lot of games for my 1st generation ipod touch (no internal speakers) I found I needed some portable speakers to get full enjoyment out of my ipod touch without having to put earphones on all the time. These speakers definitely fit the bill. The best feature of these speakers is that they are powered from the device they're attached to - meaning no batteries are needed(!) There are tiny speakers available from retail stores that can attach to the ipod touch, but they all need batteries. Believe me, feeding batteries into speakers gets real old, real fast.

These connected, folding speakers don't separate, but they can be used either opened or closed. I also like that the speakers are held in the closed position with a slightly magnetic closing and that there is a groove which provides a convenient wraparound for the speaker wire. While they are slightly larger and heavier than other similar compact speakers, they are still small enough to it in a purse or a pocket.

So my 4 star rating says "I like them" but I didn't spring for 5 stars. Why not? Because in spite of the obvious attention to design and portability that went into these speakers, at the end of the day, the ability of speakers to amplify sound is what separates the great ones from all the other ones. The biggest problem with small speakers is that they tend to sound pretty thin. To a certain extent, this problem is intrinsic to the form factor, but I guess I was also a little hopeful that Audio-Technica, a leader in the sound engineering industry, would put more resources into attempting to overcome this limitation. Although these speakers have a slightly larger form factor than other speakers, I can't honestly say that the sound quality justifies the larger form.

Another factor is the length of the connecting wire. On portable accessories such as these, the connecting wire is often too long and gets in the way. For these speakers, I think that Audio-Technica went too far in the other direction. If you are using these speakers with an ipod touch to play games, you tend to hold the device close to your face. The speakers are too heavy to dangle from the ipod touch, so ideally, they should be able to rest on your lap. Unfortunately, the speaker wire isn't quite long enough for that. I would have loved a retractable speaker wire so the length could be adjusted as needed. Also, be advised that because the speakers are powered by the device, you may not hear your content unless your device's volume is turned up pretty high.

That said, I do like the speakers, especially for playing games or listening to spoken word podcasts, where only passable sound quality is needed. I carry them with me much of the time. Also, the speakers are priced very reasonably, so they are a good value just from the money you can save on battery purchases alone. Bottom line: I would recommend them. I can't honestly say that they chart a new path for sound quality, but they do get the job done.

AudioSource LS200 Four-inch Full Range Indoor/Outdoor Speakers (Pair)

    by Audio Source (LS200)

    $59.95 $29.95
  • Three-way (full range) speakers with frequency range of 80 Hz to 20 kHz
  • Power handling of 50 watts
  • Weather-resistant
  • Perfect for indoor or outdoor use
  • Comes with mounting brackets
  • customer review: I don't know why these outdoor speakers were so cheap; they replaced much larger speakers that eventually gave it up to the weather conditions, but the sound is even better. They are powered with a standard 50-watt Sonos receiver/amplifier unit, and still sound teriffic. In fact, I like them so much that I'll probably take them down for the winter, to avoid having to replace them in a few years.
