Go Pro-Klipsch!Just want to offer my feedback on this speaker system which I've owned for over five years now. In short, the Klipsch PM 2.1 speaker set still sounds as good today as it did when I first pulled them out of the box back in '03. It has shown itself to be very reliable also, since I have had no amp issues at all as noted by a couple of other reviewers - perhaps because I have no need to really crank up the volume beyond a comfortable level (my study room is a bit on the smaller side). Hooking up the system to the computer is fairly straightforward - the assorted cables are easily identified because of the different end connectors on them. You do want to be careful with the DIN plug that goes into the back of the sub though, but once properly inserted you should have no need to touch it again.
I listen to practically all genres of music - vocal, instrumental, pop, jazz, classical, etc - and find that this system is very enjoyable to listen to and doesn't tire you out. The Klipsch PM 2.1 set also does well when watching the occasional DVD, though it probably gives up some impact if compared to a 5.1 system. In day-to-day usage, I have found that elevating the two-way satellites off the desktop a few inches gives the mid frequencies a little more presence. The sub, which I have sitting on a short step stool under the desk, provides quite a bit of punch, although it does tend to become a little muddy if you turn the bass volume switch too far past the factory recommended setting. There is also just a bit of boominess around the 100-120Hz frequencies, but is easily modified/corrected by using the computer's EQ (Apple/Mac's iTunes software is extremely helpful in this regard). These minor quibbles will not be a concern if you mostly use these speakers for gaming or movie special effects.
In summary, I have been more than satisfied with these speakers. Understanding that sound quality is so subjective in nature, I can in no way guarantee that the Klipsch PM 2.1 is the absolute best speaker set for your money, but I can confidently say that you could do a lot worse. Hope this review has been helpful to you. Peace.
2008-12-26 Refurbished and still best sound
Ok I got these from Klipsch refurbished for $89.95 and loved every penny spent on them, when 1st arrived the unit had a bad subwoofer speaker, kilpsch instantly sent out a replacement at no charge and did not even want the old bad one sent bac. ok, I also got the newer creative labs XFI sound card, these sound almost as good as my Bose hooked up to my Onkyo THX certifed receiver. the wattage is more than enough to blast you out of the room, very good tight deep deep bass, and the still no muffle, the highs are crisp and clear but not tinny or harsh, I would put these against some the best home speakers sound also, I tried alot of other 2.1 high end speakers and the logitech ones at $200 could not hold a candle against these about the only others out there that are close are the bose but at the higher $249 price, keep in mind even new these are $149, but klipsch is out and have them back ordered all the time, I was flat lucky and got a pair refurished before they were sold out.
2008-12-22 Klipsch quality, still legendary
as a music journalist, having good sound in front of my computer is essential. can't say enough about this system -- for the money, it's the best around. the bookshelf speakers are tiny but not tinny. they accurately reproduce highs and mids with excellent dynamic range. but in an of themselves, there's nothing special. what makes this system kick is the sub. its powerful and responsive, and optimized so that it sounds great when at lower volumes. in other words, you dont have to crankt he system to pump the bass. i've had this set-up for about nine months and played reggae, drum and bass, acoustic jazz, world music, rock, etc. basically anything with significant bass is gonna stand out. this system will easily fill a small room, and at louder volumes, can be heard from an adjacent room. biggest downside is probably that the chords are too short, which limits placement options. other than that, nothing really to complain about. the promedia 2.1 is a high-performance, low-cost system that can hold its own with any 2.1 rig-up out there.
2008-12-03 Great Sounding
This is probably some of the best speakers I have heard on a computer. I was in need of a good 2.1 surround and more speakers than that would be way to many. I did not want to make my computer a media center or anything so 2.1 would be sufficient. I have owned these for about a year or so and so far no technical problems. When I play video games the sound really comes through nicely and I am greatly pleased with my purchase. My little nicks I had was with stuff like never getting the sound low enough without one speaker kicking off and the overall size of the speakers are a downer. I never really had a need of blasting the sound often but when I did I noticed no difference in quality of sound. I also noticed a huge difference in sound when I used my XiFi Fatality soundcard and the quality of sound became more clear and more lively through my own customization. The sound wasn't inferior or anything without the card but since I already had it I used it. I would recommend these speakers to anyone looking for a good 2.1 system.
2008-11-23 Absolutely incredible!
I cannot express how great these speakers are. They are the best set of desktop speakers I have ever owned. One thing I would like to cover is the evident failure rate of this system. It seems to be with most people that this system goes out in about a year. This has not been the case with me. My speakers have lasted me about 2 years so far, and they are working just as well as when they started.
The quality of the sound that comes out of these speakers is just phenomenal for a desktop system. Great, clear, distinctive highs, rich lows, and good mid-range. This system is definitely a demonstration of the abilities of Klipsch.
